給孩子的紀念船 nakem so anak a tatala

Ceremonial boat given to children

1.o niparengan ko so sia am, ya aboata o nizpi namen

do kavavahay namen a, ikongo o vooden da jiaken

no minapodpod jiken koan ko am,

ori  o   nipamarengan ko so sia.

The reason that I made this boat was because we had no money, and I thought, “What can I pass down to my children as an inheritance?” That is why I made this little boat.

2.akma so no rarakeh ko rana, abo ko rana do karawan am,

amian do vahay namen, ta citacitaen da

no minapodpod jiaken, ori  a.

Then, one day, when I grow old, or I have died, this may be at home so that my children can see it (commemorate).

macita ko pa, am ori   o niparengan ko so sia,

ta ikarilaw ko sira a akmi abo so   i nakem so

minapodpod jiaken, am ori  o niparengan ko so sia.

If they wish to sell it, then they may sell it, since I cannot see it anymore anyway. I have made this boat because I do not think that I have anything to give my children. Therefore I made this boat, a little something that I can give my children to appreciate.

4.ya aro   o  tao a dehdeh  a  ya mapacici sia,

”a sikapira o ya?” “to mo nazangi mo kehakay,

ta kasazangan mo mo kehakay?

ya ji   ateymasingat mo kehakay a”

“a ya sikapira?” “a ya ji  a30 mo kehakay a”,

“wo! teymasingat mo kehakay an” koan da am,

ori ya aro   o  ya mapacici sia am, ya ko ji noroan,

ta  ngongyod saon a ko vezeden do anak ko  o  kma sia,

a pi-作紀念 ko sira am,

Many people asked me, “How much are you selling this for?” “Oh, you want to buy it? You couldn’t, my friend, it is very expensive.” “How much?” “Three hundred thousand.” “Oh, that expensive?” Therefore, although many people ask me about selling the boat, I refuse to sell it because I made this boat for my children so that they may have something as commemoration.

5.no piyangayin   mo  o  ya likey a tatala ya,

a ka no ngongyod a tatala am, ikongo o masalisalit?

masalisalit o  ya lilikey ya an? a no ……

If you compared the making of this boat and normal boats, which do you think is more difficult? Is the little one more difficult? Or…?

6.a masalit manga wari ta, masalit o aliliket,

a no teylikey o pinanan am,  ori  o  ikasalit na am,

ta ikasalit,

My brother, it is actually not that difficult. If the smaller one is harder, it is only because the markings are smaller and therefore harder to carve.

7.masalsalit saon o ararako, ta o   ikasalit na am,

manamod o kararakoan na a pisonosonongen a parngen,

a tabtaban? Am  o   ya am, ya liliket a ya   teysa

ka lima a ya to marenga, am ikakeykai na no nia.

Larger boats are harder to make because it is larger. Whether it is correcting (connecting) or planing, (more time is required and connecting takes more effort) it is more difficult. However, with a small boat like this, you can make it even with one hand. Therefore it is much faster.

8.akmi nimahay, ta nimiveyvazay ko am,

ji ko makdekdengi o kapivazay ko sia am,

ta kahahay na no nia? Kapira a vehan rana o ito?

The reason that this boat took longer was because I had other work to do at the time, and therefore could not focus on this boat. It actually did not take that long to make this boat. It did not take several months.

9.no kavatek mo jia am, amiamizing ko am,

oya am, ngongyod kono  o  ya  a  cirawat no tao nokakoa,

o  taotao ya a ka no mata na o pangayin da koan da.

I heard that people who carved boats in the past would only carve these eyes and human markings.

ta ji da  zisazisanga  o  ya, ji   da   to ngoana sang a,

ji abo  o  ya, to da ngoana sang a, kakma  na so sang a,

makoan so sang,

This is real (body marked with human shapes), but this hand is not like this (like a screw). It should be made (carved) into straight lines or like a comb, not like this (screw). They do it like this, then carve it into straight lines or like a comb.

11.am oya am, aday a taotao o  ya?

Do you carve human shapes on this whole thing?

12.beken, o   ikeykaza saon no tao  am,

bekena nokakoa am, o ya am,  akmi volavolaw ya,

ma-空白oya, toda mimin a malavang ya,

a kavolavolaw na, a kalavang na,

   w/M           白白的

keyan na  no adoa ya, a mata na ya,

a keyan na jia no  asa am, ya liket am,

ji da pangayi so taotao,

No, it is a personal preference. In the past, where I have the volavolaw carvings, it would be blank (only colored). The next panel is covered with volavolaw carvings, and the one after that is blank. The one on the very end is used for the eye of the boat, and above that are the human shaped carvings. However, because there is so little space here, I put on these types of decorations. Normally, they are human shaped carvings.

13.pangayan ori so taotao? nohon,

ya likey o 位置 na ori am … …

Do you carve human shapes here too? Yes, but there is very little space…

13.ya likey o  na yanan am, ori ko pangayan so sia am,

Because there is so little space, I carved this type of decoration.

14.a  o   ososo ya am, mo nipapo rana ya an?

Did you create this (triangular) carving that is dug out?

15.kena ipanci da ngepengepn na ya,

No, this is what people call “its teeth.”

16.am mo nipapo rana ya an?

Did you make it up?

17.ta papoan ko sia?

No, I did not make it up.

18.o ya na ikakoan sito a ya apat ito an?

(Did you make up) those four layered carvings?

19.ta papoan ko sia, nimlapo nokakoa saon am,

I did not make that up. They had those in the past.

20.ya  abo  do jia   o  mo nipapo?

So there is nothing here that you made up yourself?

21.oya saon o ko nipapo am, o ngazab na ya am,

ta ji abo  o   ya do tao o mivatek so sia ori a,

ori ko nipapo a.

I only made up the carvings on the side of the boat. Normally, people do not have these carvings (in the inside of the boat). Only si aman Manoal’s boat has these carvings. I only made up these.

22. o   yaheb na ya am, amian do tao  o omvatek do jia?

ori   o  ko nipangay, am oya am  ji  aro rana ya do tao a,

o ngazab na ya am, ori   o  ya abo jira,

No one carves the anchor plate; that is my own creation. However, the carvings here are very simple. Only the carvings on the bottom of the side are ones that no one else has done.

23.o  ya am, ikongo o pipipangayan no kaosos do jia?

Why did you dig a hole here (in the fish compartment at the tail of the boat)? What does it mean?

24.o   ya am, pasogatan so irasan ya, asa do maoji na,

asa do morong na. no mian so mavaci a irasan am,

apen mo ta papaliten mo  a atkaw,

This is for back-up oarlocks, one at the front of the boat and one at the back of the boat. If (during sailing) one of your oarlocks breaks, you can take one from here to replace your broken oarlock.

25.ta no mian  do pangaaapan am, kato na vacian

no irasan mo am, ji ka na makakaod a,

o   ya am, paseksekan so ikoa, no nimavaci am,

apen a kapapalit sia, ori am, atkaw ori.

If you are fishing in the sea and one of your oarlocks breaks, you can no longer row the boat. Therefore, back-up oarlocks are stuck into this hole. If your oarlock breaks, then you can take one from here to replace your broken oarlock.

koan da   o   ai  na ito.

As for this feather decoration, people say that with it the carved boat is more beautiful.

28.no to pakaroa ya am, a ajin jia o ikazoazoay na jito?

am si to mo pangaya am, ji akazoay na ta.

If you take it off, look, how is it beautiful? But if you put it on, and there is no question, it has become more beautiful.

So those feathers are just for decoration and have no other special meaning?

30.koanta, morong  na koan da am,

to vatki a, .....

a manngo paro o tao ya, to migolgol o tao  am,

a mazoay no to migolgol,

ori   o kapalangayan na no nia.

Of course, they call it morong (boat decoration) because if you just finish carving the boat… I don’t know. If someone shaved his head, would you think he was attractive? The same logic applies to boats.

31.o   ya am, beken a tao rana o paciloloan na

no kablilblis so樣子na no ikoa ya, a ji ngian do tao,

As for this, it really depends on the person. If a person likes it a certain way, he will change it depending on his own thinking. People have different thoughts and opinions.

ikongo do jito o citaen da teyapia so kapahawak koan da.

What does our village feel is the best kapahawak? How do they determine this?

33.ji  da  nita  o  ya, no matazineng o  ya ori am,

ori   o  apia citaen ori a,

They will look at this (the curvature of the keel). If it is carved very straight, they will say that it is unattractive. It should be like this, with a gradual curve. That is attractive.

34.o ipanci da maspa am, no mian do jia a masngen

no macikarai o  tao am, ori ipanci a mawadwad am.

There is something they call maspa; if the oarlock is very close to here it is called maspa, because if the oarlock is too close, then the ropes will touch this in back. If they row like this, then they call it maspa (gets in the way?) If you pull them apart by a little, there is much more space.

35.o   ya am sansan do morongan, no makamong am,

This thing near the front of the boat is the cabin. If people catch fish, they will put them here. They must not be mixed with the fish caught from the back because it makes it easier to count the number of fish that you caught.

36.a  o  among no nia am, no koan no tao am,

This person’s fish… Some people say, “Do not put my fish with your catch.” That person put his fish there. “What happened to the fish that I put here?” They all know, so it is important to split the fish in different areas.

37.ipanonoong so minapan ya, o nimapan a alibangbang

This is for storing flying fish caught at sea. When you go out to fish at sea, the flying fish you catch is put in here. Then you cover it with this.

38.ngaran no nia am  motmot, no maparing rana am,

This is called motmot. If it mapareng, then you can use it to store flying fish caught at sea. This is called yaheb; you step on it. This is the sansan in the middle, which can be used as a pad to sit on.

Many people put this here because they believe that it stables their seating. However, many people do not like it because they do not like not being able to move their seats. This is the middle seat mat (square mat) and this is the mat for the front of the boat (cover for the fish compartment, triangular).

If the oars are tied too close to the oarlocks, it is very difficult to row backwards, but if it is too loose, the oars will not be secure and will bang into the side of the boat, making it difficult to row. Therefore, the distance between the oar and the oarlock when tying them must be just right.

For a person with experience, when he ties the oars, particularly with a boat that is being used, when they are securing the oars, they will leave space about the width of two fingers between the oar and the side of the boat. The width of two fingers is just right. This is what an experienced person would do.

This oarlock is made from a very firm wood from a tree called iraw. This tree is very common up there. Most of this boat was made from the nato tree. The keel was made from the tapa tree, the base of the boat from the nato tree, and the sansan board and oars were also made from the nato tree.

The bottoms of these two boats were made from drift wood and are not easy to carve. Not only is it cylinder, the tips are thinner than the middle, so it is not easy to carve.

Calcium hydroxide is used to produce the white color. The red is from red dirt collected from the mountains. These colors are painted onto the boat.

However, when they went out to sea, the color got washed away. Since it was not paint, it washed away easily. Therefore, people in the past were very unfortunate. Look at these (patterns) and think of how long they must have taken to draw.

In the past, people were very hard working. Ever year, after the ceremony for inviting the flying fish was over, those with boats would start to color their boats. Therefore, they were very unfortunate. I guess they were not really unfortunate, it was more that they were very hard working.

In the past, for the people who knew how to build boats, they could chip and shave a board for the boat. For a person who didn’t know how to build a boat, how could you say it was easy?
