1.nokakoa manga anak ko am,

    以前    親愛的  孩子 

o    abo  so  ora manga anak ko am,

主格 沒有 斜格 芋頭 親愛的  孩子  

tana aboabo ora  no maowyat manga anak ko am,

不論   沒有    芋頭 屬格  勤勞   親愛的  孩子   

toda angay dang manga anak ko,

        那裡 親愛的  孩子  

am ori ji da akcini no aboabo so hahakawan ya an.

      那個 他們     屬格  沒有  斜格    田地      

[:以前啊,有些人家(指男性)雖然沒有芋田,但若很勤勞,也可以是托付

終身的人,因為嫁給勤勞的人是不會餓肚子的]

In the past, some people (males) had no taro fields, yet they were diligent. It was OK to marry people like that because one would not starve if married to a hard-working man.

 

2.toda aro  o  hakawan da ori manga anak ko,

      很多 主格  田地   他們 那個 親愛的 孩子 

ta kaji na vonongan pa jira a meyketeketeh am,

              分配      他們     兄弟姊妹    

 [:有些人家芋田是很多,但那是因為兄弟們還沒有分田的情形]

Some families had many taro fields because their brothers had not yet divided their fields.

 

3.o   meyketeketeh do cinai[1] am,

  主格    兄弟姊妹   處格  腸子  

meyyawaoka rana manga anak ko am,

     ?        已經  親愛的 孩子   

a ji da vononga manga anak ko am, 

        他們  分配   親愛的  孩子   

[:等兄弟們都長大了,要分家了,那些田就會分掉了]

After the brothers had all grown up, they would divide the fields.

 

4.… to lida o   kiyan no vahalang ya,

       長出 主格     屬格   鐵棒    

a mitatangtang sira  manga anak ko am,

    打鐵        他們   親愛的 孩子   

ori nitazestes  no velek nokakoa an,

    那樣  逐漸,漸漸   屬格 肚子    以前    

[:直到有了這個鐵棒,人們才漸漸有飽肚的情形]

Not until steel tools appeared did people gradually have enough to eat.

 

5.alilikey namen pa dang no kapitatangtang no tao,

    都很小    我們     那時 屬格    打鐵當時

no kiyan no vahalang a nimaladaw  a avang

屬格     屬格            漂浮                

manga anak ko,

    親愛的  孩子 

[:有漂流船以後,有人開始打鐵,那是我們都還很小的時候]

When we were all still very young, abandoned boats floated ashore, and some people began to make steel tools (from materials acquired onboard).

6.to dey ngapa ori a pitatangtang a vahalang manga anak ko,

   就 他們      那個 繫    打鐵處              親愛的  孩子 我的

am  ori nikabsoy rana no tao manga anak ko a,

      那樣    飽肚    已經  屬格 人  親愛的 孩子  我 助

[:他們撿了廢鐵製成工具以後,人們才開始有飽肚的情形]

No sooner had they picked up abandoned steel and made tools before people began to fill their stomachs with enough food.

 

7.miratateng am, teyka sira mitatangtang am,

      後來         完成   他們     打鐵       

isibo da rana ori a ipicicibcib manga anak ko an,

    帶上山 他們 已經 那個              親愛的 孩子   

[:後來他們做好工()具之後,就帶去山上砍草用]

Later, after they finished making the steel tools, they took them to the mountains to cut grass.

 

8.o maowyat manga anak ko am, 

  主格 勤勞的  親愛的 孩子   

mamareng sira so makekma sito a ipanengeh da zaig an,

         他們 斜格         那個    砍建材   他們 斧頭 

a nikamaog no vahay no tao an manga anak ko an,

       完成   屬格 房子  屬格      親愛的 孩子  

[:比較勤勞的人會製造像這樣的斧頭,拿來砍建材用,而建造了房子]

People who were more diligent made axes to cut lumber and finished building their houses.

 

9.ori  ori  a, mamaog rana o vahay no tao ori am,

   那樣 那個    完成  已經 主格 房子 屬格   那個

malavot rana sira, yatep  da jia,

  拔茅草  已經  他們  蓋屋頂用 他們

mamazit rana sira so yakeyaked da sia an  

 採集藤   已經  他們 斜格   繫繩     他們       

manga anak ko an,   

    親愛的  孩子   

[:他們(建材)做成了房子以後,接下來是拔茅草來蓋屋頂,採集vazit藤來綁固房子用]

After finishing their houses (with lumber), they picked twitch grass to build their thatch roofs. They also collected vazit rattan to strengthen their houses.

 

10.ya na toda pia siciaikoa ya,

               現在,目前 

ta vahavahalang a miniminileng rana  ya ipamareng am,

      鐵類            鐵釘        已經       製造    

na ikaboata rana no zikzikna rana siciaikoa ya an,

       使全無    已經 屬格  勞苦     已經  現在,目前    

[:現在情形好多了,有鐵類鐵釘來蓋房子用, 所以現在蓋起房子也不再像以前那樣勞苦了]

The situation now is much better. It is no longer as hard as it used to be because we are using steel and nails to build houses.

 

11.teymakcin dang manga anak ko no mapapo so vahay ya an,

     非常餓     那時  親愛的  孩子 屬格  創建  斜格 房子   

ta mavakes saon o somibo do ahakawan am  

    女人   只有 主格 上山   處格  田地     

no mihahakawan manga anak ko am,

    屬格   有田地的   親愛的  孩子  

[:建蓋房子是讓人感受非常飢餓的事情,因為芋田所有的照顧責任完全落在女人的身上]

When we built houses, we felt extremely hungry because only women were taking care of the taro fields.

 

12.apia o mihahakawan manga anak ko am,

    很好 主格  有田地的    親愛的 孩子   

o   abo  so  ora  am,

主格 沒有 斜格 芋田

a tosia o kapisoli so keykeytan am,

  不要 主格 種田    斜格   山芋     

ovowvi am patapatan? am ori ikzikna   nokakoa

 山葯       山地瓜       那様 辛苦的原因  以前

manga anak ko a,

    親愛的  孩子  

[:有田的人還好,但沒田的人家,不僅要整理芋田,而且還要闢耕山芋田,山葯田, 山地瓜田等,所以以前的人真的是相當辛苦]

It was not as bad for people who owned fields. But for those who had no fields, they not only had to take care of taro fields but also cultivate mountain taro, yam, and sweet potato fields. So the people in the past had a hard life.

 

13.ya to nazestes rana o kanekanen am,

        漸漸的   已經 主格 食物     

asio pa o vazavazay namen a rarakeh manga anak ko?

哪有   主格 事情,工作 我們     老人家   親愛的 孩子

ikabsoy do  niyan no vahalang a nitintangtang da

 使飽    處格  已有  屬格  鐵棒         打過的鐵    他們

no kiyan no mikalaladaw a  vahalang manga anak ko,

       屬格   漂流物               親愛的 孩子 

a  nitnek     no tao a mabsoy am, 

    原本,早有的 屬格     飽肚  

[:現在食物漸漸的多樣了,現在的老人家哪裡還有什麼辛苦的工作?所以有了漂流船,有了鐵製工具以後,才有了現在可以吃飽的情形]

But the variety of food has increased now. It’s no longer necessary for old people to do hard labor. The reason we can fill our stomachs now is due to boats made of steel drifting ashore and steel tools.

 

14.(o   aboabo so orowra am,

    主格 沒有的 斜格  田地  

ta mangay sira do takey o   abo  so  ora manga anak ko,

        他們  處格 山上 主格 沒有 斜格 芋田 親愛的  孩子

ta asio o vahalang nokakoa?)

  哪有 主格  鐵棒     以前

[:以前,沒有田的人家根本就不上山,因為沒有工具能做什麼?]

(In the past, people who had no fields would not go to the mountains. What could they do without steel rods?)

 

15.to ngian o vahalang a nimikalaldaw

             主格            漂流的

manga anak ko am, ori   o nipitatangtang da am,

   親愛的 孩子       那樣 主格     打鐵        他們

[:直到有了漂流船後,才有了鐵製的工具]

Not until the emergence of abandoned floating boats did they have tools made of steel.

 

16.ipisoli da am, .., tana ji ko mancian

     種芋田 他們         即使     

manga anak ko  do amaogan da sia am,

     親愛的 孩子  處格   製造  他們   

ori manga anak ko,

那樣  親愛的 孩子 

itazestes no tao a nikabsoy no tao,

逐漸,漸漸  屬格      使飽    屬格  

niyan rana no vahay ya no  tao a,

     才有   已經 屬格  房子   屬格  

[:進而用來闢耕芋田用; 不用我多說(你也可以想像),他們拿鐵會製成什麼東西; 有了鐵製工具後,不僅讓人們吃飽了,也有房子可住了]

They were used to cultivate taro fields. I don’t need to elaborate on what tools they could make out of steel (you can use your imagination). After the implementation of steel tools, people began to fill their stomachs, and they also began to live in houses.

 

17.apia(被剪)o  mirarakeh manga anak ko,

    可以      主格 家有老人的  親愛   孩子

ta ipanenpeng da sira am, ipanpeng da sira ta,

    食物裝盆  他們 他們     食物裝盆  他們 他們

kaowyat da   no rarakeh nokakoa a abo pa  o vahalang,

 很勤勞  他們 屬格 老人家     以前    沒有 主格  鐵棒(車聲大)

kiyan no nimikaladaladaw a avang nokakoa  am,

    好在有 屬格     漂流物               以前     

[:還有,父母健在的人家也是福氣,有的時候,他們還會給子女送食物呢。但是在還沒有鐵製工具以前,你以為老人家這麼勤勞(有辦法顧到子女的生活)?那是自從有漂流船以後,才有的事情]

It is a blessing for families whose old parents are still alive because sometimes they would give food to their children. But do you think the old folks were as diligent (able to take care of their children’s lives) before the emergence of steel tools? This (change of life) is all due to boats made of steel drifting ashore.

 

18.ya matkaw rana no kankanen no dehdeh

      省下來  已經 屬格   食物    屬格 外地人

a ya ikeylamnay rana siciaika ya am,

   使輕鬆      已經  現在,目前  

na ikapia rana manga anak ko am,

       改善   已經   親愛的 孩子 

[:一方面,因為外地人的食物(進口食品),讓我省了我們傳統的食物[2],讓我們變得輕鬆,讓我們的生活獲得改善]

On the other hand, due to the import of non-traditional foods, we have saved up traditional food. Our work load has decreased and our lives have improved accordingly.

 

19.ori ori manga anak ko am, tosia o  ya wagwagen

    那樣 那個 親愛的 孩子      不要 主格   使荒廢

a wakawakay  manga anak ko,  keykeytan am,

    地瓜園      親愛的  孩子       山芋      

[:再說,地瓜園,山芋田也是須要休耕的]

Besides, sweet potato and mountain taro fields should be allowed to lie fallow.

 

20.no mikekeytan manga anak ko am,                

       種山芋     親愛的  孩子 

wagwagen a kapeysoli so katakatangked na

  使荒廢   然後種水芋 斜格 旁邊,鄰近,周邊 

a miyahas manga anak ko,  

     變荒地  親愛的  孩子 

[:當要種山芋的時候,必須先荒廢掉原來的田地(休耕),而另闢鄰近的地塊種植作物]

When it was time to grow mountain taro, one would let the old field lie fallow and cultivate a new adjacent field to grow plants.

 

21.ikateymazikna no aboabo so  ora manga anak ko an,

      所以非常辛苦  屬格 沒有的 斜格 芋田 親愛的  孩子  

am ikabo     no  ora da? mavonong rana jira ori

沒有的原因 屬格 芋田 他們   分配掉   已經  他們  那個

a miketeketeh do cinai an, tomayo o   teytetlo 

  兄弟姊妹    處格          頂多  主格 ..三個..

a abneng itoro da no  meyrarakeh ya,

               他們 屬格 家有老人的 

[:所以沒有芋的人家是相當辛苦的。說人家沒有田也不是真的沒田,而是因為兄弟分田以後,芋田不夠維生而已,老人家也不過分給每個兒子三塊田]

Therefore, it was very difficult for those who had no taro fields. Actually, it is not fair to say they had no fields. After the fields were divided among the brothers, it was not sufficient to make a living because the old folks only gave each son three taro fields.

 

22.arahen da manga anak ko a sibowan da pa am, 

       ?   他們 親愛的 孩子     山上   他們  

.. ori do niyan na no vahalang ya am  ori an

    那樣 處格      屬格  鐵具         那樣

manga anak ko.

     親愛的 孩子 

[:畢竟他們還在世時,也要種來自己吃用。這是有了鐵製工具以後,關於農事耕作的情形]

After all, the old folks had to keep some fields to provide for their own living when they were still alive. This is what happened to our agricultural production after steel tools became available.


 

[1] meyketeketeh do cinai 直譯為腸子裡的兄弟姊妹”, 即為同一母親所生”,親兄弟姊妹, 同胞手足。

Meyketeketeh do cinai (lit. in a relationship of siblings in the intestines) means siblings born of the same mother.

 

[2] 指第12段所指的本島所種的作物, 因為進口外地食品,不致使本島所種的作物很快吃完。

It refers to the local agricultural products in paragraph 12. Due to the import of food, the local agricultural produts are not consumed too quickly.
